Lilly Birthday Parties Galore!

January 26th, 2010

Lately, I have been writer’s blog blocked…not feeling very creative with my stories this week. So for a lil’ inspiration I went Lilly-surfing on google this morning and came across a hoard of pictures from kid’s (and some adult’s) birthday parties. The pictures are so adorable! It honestly makes me wish I had a four year old so I can do all these amazing and creative things for their birthday! Give me 6 years and I’ll (hopefully) be doing just that! So I’ve decided today I am going to show you all the adorable pictures that I came across in order to give you some great ideas for your kids, grandkids, or even your own birthday party! Enjoy!

Have you ever noticed just how stark and boring the local pet supply store’s collars are getting? I am so tired of the plain and boring for my pooch and have searched the web for some cute and preppy items! Since I’m preppy, I feel my puppy should be preppy also!

www.fourpreppypaws.com has ADORABLE collars! I love all of them! Here are my most favorites, though!

You’ve heard it right! Lilly Pulitzer and Garnet Hill have teamed up to deliver beyond amazing collections for your home! Janie Schoenborn, design director for Lilly Pulitzer, said it was because of “overwhelming demand” from their loyal customers. “We know that Lilly customers love to decorate their homes, and they’ll love to do it in Lilly,” Schoenborn said. “Like your wardrobe, the home collection will build a lively linen closet. Mix and match the pieces to freshen a room, and future collections will provide new, fresh-squeezed items that will work with the flagship coordinates found in the spring launch — the possibilities are endless.”

The collection was collaberated by a team from Garnet Hill, as well as the design team from Lilly, in order to build a collection that was inspired by past, present, and even future prints from Lilly Pulitzer. Customers have anywhere from towels to bedding to even shower curtains to choose from.

“Together, with the best textiles and a lighthearted attitude, we have created pieces that appeal to all generations,” said Amy Leighton, vice president of Garnet Hill’s Home division. “From the finishing touches to a master bedroom to an off-to-college gift for sorority row or a first apartment, this collection will make you smile.”

We are so excited to have Garnet Hill in all our Lilly-loving lives! Thank you Garnet Hill! We can’t wait to begin our home shopping!

What do you buy someone who has everything? What do you buy someone who, when asked, only says, “Oh nothing. I don’t need anything in particular”? …Can we say aggrevating? So with those questions, which I feel like I hear EVERY year, I’ve decided to put a few ideas for you from the amazing and adorable store called The Pink Pelican (www.thepinkpelican.com).

HAPPY HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

It may be possible that I am the only 26 year old woman in the clothing business who HATES malls…there, I said it! It’s not the shops (TRUST me, I love brand clothing!), its crowds! And during Christmas time I avoid malls at all costs. Since my love of clothing is ever-so prevalent (you should see my closet) I am obsessed with boutique shopping. Not a lot of people know this, but most boutiques have amazing sales - especially during the holiday time. The Pink Pelican, for example, already has all their Lilly Pulitzer fall clothing on sale AND even have their own outlet online store (www.preppyoutlet.com), which carries tons of uber-cute Lilly clothing and other brands at great prices. It’s so easy to shop, and with a 100% refund return policy it makes shopping stess free! All you have to do is send it back within 5 days! Easy! So this year, I recommend www.thepinkpelican.com and www.preppyoutlet.com. There is even a men’s section AND kids!

Happy Shopping!

Exciting, exciting, exciting news!

Amy Price, who is a writer for the Examiner (www.examiner.com), came in recently to our store to see how things were going with our new store. She was beyond friendly and we all had so much fun talking with her about The Pink Pelican. We are so excited about her article that we wanted to share it with you all! Enjoy!

The Pink Pelican opens new location at Bridge Street Town Center

When you walk through the doors of The Pink Pelican’s Bridge Street location, you are struck by the lightness of the interior and the friendliness of the staff.  As you are soothed by subtle, calming scents and sounds, you notice that amid the sweeter offerings of luxurious scarves, children’s clothing and gifts are racks of glamorous frocks begging for a night on the town.

Visitors to The Pink Pelican find that the staff is welcoming, the brands are unique and the atmosphere has a come-and-sit-awhile feel.  Owner Angela Kloote is warm, friendly and excited about fashion and bringing beautiful hard to find pieces of clothing to the Huntsville shopper.

The Pink Pelican

The Pink Pelican

The store’s collection and appeal is varied with warm and fuzzy handmade sweaters by Odd Molly vying for attention next to an elegant Tracy Reese dress recently seen onCougar Town.   Classic black is well represented, but with detailing that keeps it exciting. Silk watercolor prints by Claude Brown that cry out for an art opening and a comfortable-enough-to-nap-in cocktail dress by Yoana Barachi will turn any dress lovers knees weak.  All of the pieces have been carefully chosen by Angela, who pays close attention to the trends and interprets them in a very wearable way.  Her store has a something-for-everyone focus, with quality ruling over quantity. Customers won’t find many of any one item, making the purchase of an investment piece all the more valuable to the buyer.

The Pink Pelican’s original location at the Village on Whitesburg has been up and running since 2007, both locations carry mens clothing as well as a selection of unique gifts.  To help the time crunched or those challenged in the area of giftwrapping, they do that too.  You can also visit them on the web at www.ThePinkPelican.com, and you can find them on Facebook and Twitter.

Courtney Cox is fabulous, and we mean F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! We’re sure you have seen her new show, Cougar Town. Her style and grace is amazing and she has never looked better! Recently she shot at the beach for an episode where she was “spotted” wearing the Lilly Pulitzer ‘Cameron’ sunglasses! (See, we TOLD you she was fabulous). Anyways,  we wanted to tell you the little story about how she came about to wearing them on her show!

courteney-cox-cougar-scream

In Santa Monica, CA there is a Lilly Pulitzer Via Shop called CABANA. They recently sent out an e-mail telling us & other Via Shops about the Cougar Town stylists coming in and shopping for the show! The stylists will go around town (and the internet) and buy large amounts of clothing, accessories, and shoes for the show. The items they pick may or may not be seen on the show, so when they are it’s HUGE for the designer! Soooo…. we are SO excited that the Lilly Pulitzer ‘Cameron’ sunglasses made the cut! And because of the show they are in high demand. There is one last thing you all might not know, THE PINK PELICAN HAS THEM!!! We are one of the only stores left that have them available to sell! If you are interested, go to www.thepinkpelican.com and you will find them! Love it!

So happy Cougar shopping!!

Actress Julia Roberts visited the  Madison Avenue Lilly store Wednesday to check out our Spring 2009 Collection!!!!

She came in with her assistant and spent most of her time in the store looking through the Ladies and Minnies collections and commented how the store was so cheerful and beautifully decorated.  She also LOVED the vintage dresses being sold on the 2nd Floor of the store and even purchased one (see below), along with a pink and white Minnie’s headband (for her daughter, Hazel).

The Madison Avenue team said Julia was just lovely and had a great visit!

New York Times Loves Lilly!

March 20th, 2009

OMG! Even The New York Times Sunday Styles Loves Lilly! They featured our Spring Brycer Dress (which the Pink Pelican has of course!) as a paper doll outfit - too cute!  The article read, “In times of trouble, pink is the shopper’s comfort color, and now is no exception.  With stores and sidewalks populated with rosier hues, here are some of the best ways to play with pink this season.” We LOVE the way they think!

We love our Marines!

March 21st, 2009

We love our Marines! And we love them even more wearing Lilly! Take a look at our beautiful customer Michela and her husband Paul.  Aren’t they an adorable couple? Please keep Paul in your prayers as he actively deployed in Afghanistan defending our country.

I had corresponded with Michela today, and had closed my message with “Semper Fi!” That got me thinking, exactly what does that mean? My DH and I have a close friendship over many years with a Marine Corp family, even going to the Marine Corp Birthday Ball a few times. So, I know the term is latin for “Always Faithful”.  But why not just say “Always Faithful”?  I think its because when something is so important, we just translate it to Latin.  Kind of like Carpe Diem, or E Plurbus Unun, or Mea Culpa (I certainly use that one a lot).

But the key word is Always. Not sometimes, not when we feel like it, but Always, no matter what. I guess that’s why you’re never a “ex-Marine,” but “always a Marine.”

In today’s times, isn’t it so comforting to know that we can always count on our Marines, as they will Always be Faithful?

Mother Jasmine

March 27th, 2009

I received one of those emails today from a good friend (thanks Amy!), and I just had to share. I checked it out and it’s absolutely true!

From left, Toby, a stray Lakeland dog; Bramble, an orphaned roe deer; Buster, a stray Jack Russell; a dumped rabbit; Sky, an injured barn owl; and Jasmine

This is the story of a dog so saintly, birds perch on her nose.

In 2003, police in Warwickshire, England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had clearly been abused.

In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a female greyhound, to the nearby Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a name named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need.

Geoff Grewcock and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims: to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved.

They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

The dog had other ideas. No-one remembers now how it began, but Jasmine started welcoming all animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It wouldn’t matter if it was a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, probably, a rhinoceros, Jasmine would peer into the box or cage and, where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.

Geoff Grewcock relates one of the early incidents. “We had two puppies that had been abandoned by a nearby railway line. One was a Lakeland Terrier cross and another was a Jack Russell Doberman cross. They were tiny when they arrived at the centre and Jasmine approached them and grabbed one by the scruff of the neck in her mouth and put him on the settee. Then she fetched the other one and sat down with them, cuddling them.”

“But she is like that with all of our animals, even the rabbits. She takes all the stress out of them and it helps them to not only feel close to her but to settle into their new surroundings.

“She has done the same with the fox and badger cubs, she licks the rabbits and guinea pigs and even lets the birds perch on the bridge of her nose.”

Jasmine, the timid, abused, deserted waif, became the animal sanctuary’s resident surrogate mother, a role for which she might have been born. The list of orphaned and abandoned youngsters she has cared for comprises five fox cubs, four badger cubs, 15 chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and 15 rabbits.

And one roe deer fawn. Tiny Bramble, 11 weeks old, was found semi-conscious in a field. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Jasmine cuddled up to her to keep her warm, and then went into the full foster mum role. Jasmine the greyhound showers Bramble the roe deer with affection and makes sure nothing is matted in her fur.

“They are inseparable,” says Geoff Grewcock. “Bramble walks between her legs and they keep kissing each other. They walk together round the sanctuary. It’s a real treat to see them.”

Jasmine will continue to care for Bramble until she is old enough to be returned to woodland life. When that happens, Jasmine will not be lonely. She will be too busy showering love and affection on the next orphan or victim of abuse.

Harlan Coben Loves Lilly!

March 31st, 2009

This morning, our favorite Lilly loving (and best-selling!) author, Harlan Coben was interviewed by Al Roker on NBC’s TODAY SHOW to promote his new book, LONG LOST, that was released today!  The interview took place during the show’s 9am hour…but Harlan was so excited about his outfit, he sent a message via TWITTER to Al about it last night.  It read:

To Al Roker (alroker1) from Harlan Coben (harlancoben) via TWITTER:

I’ll be wearing Lilly Pulitzer tie and blue suit. I think. Wouldn’t it be awful if we clashed?about 15 hours ago from web in reply to alroker1

The April issue of ELLE Magazine features an article on our 50th Anniversary Jubilee!  The piece titled, “SUNNY OUTLOOK” and draws comparison between the brand’s Jackie Kennedy beginnings, when she was photographed in a Lilly Pulitzer shift while vacationing in Capri in 1962, and the bright fashions the new First Lady, Michelle Obama, has brought to the White House.  The article says “it’s fitting then, that on the year of the brand’s fiftieth anniversary, a new generation gets its own version of Camelot, one with a leading lady who’s already proved she’s not afraid to clothe herself or her girls in all the colors of the rainbow.”

The story also features four of Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau’s grandchildren: Chris, Charlotte, Jack, and Rodman, modeling styles from the Resort 08 and Spring 09 Collections in “the Jungle”, Lilly’s backyard.

The article also references our fun 50th Jeep & Steinway.  Next up, dressing the first family!

Here’s a great excerpt from my new favorite blog:  Etiquette With Miss Janice:

All y’all know by now that you may start wearing your white shoes and carrying your white pocketbooks on Easter Sunday…Here’s Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy with Young John Fitzgerald, Jr. on Easter Sunday 1963…
There is also etiquette to be followed when wearing gloves and corsages. Proper etiquette dictates that gloves are removed when entering a building, whether it is a tearoom or a church. It is not considered proper to shake hands while wearing gloves (only the Queen of England can get away with this) or to eat or drink while wearing gloves. Remove your gloves in a lady like fashion, one finger at a time. Always hold your pocketbook and gloves in your left hand so that you will be ready to shake hands at any time.

Remember, only the Queen of England may wear gloves while shaking hands!

Corsages are a tradition in the South and may be worn on Easter Sunday. Corsages are pinned to the clothing on the left shoulder.

The Palins, wearing their corsages (and boutineer) on the left hand shoulder.
Corsages may also be worn as a “wristlet,” attached to a ribbon and tied around the wrist.

Whether you are attending Church, an Afternoon Tea, a wedding, or any other fancy event, remember to practice proper Hat, Glove, and Corsage Etiquette.

Now please go pay Miss Janice a visit and let us know what you think!!

OK, you’ve asked and we’ve delivered! See Behind-the-Scenes of the Lilly Pulitzer Spring 2009 Photo Shoot!! What do you think of the Spring line? Some say it’s the cutest Spring Lilly has ever made. I know it is hot because it’s getting harder to order certain items for our customers.

We all know we are all in love with ‘Mad Men’ (kisses Don Draper!), but the real belle of the ball is the costume designer for Mad Men. Janie Bryant, a  Georgia State University alum, is the mind behind all the debonair styles we see each week.  And believe it or not, her style inspirations hail from her Grandmother.

I don’t know about you, but I’m in love with all the cute fall things that are everywhere! And the best thing about Fall (for me, anyways) are all the wonderful pumpkins! So today I’m going out of my usual-ness of talking about brands and am going to give you a Fall treat. It’s super simple…it is on how to roast your own pumpkin seeds! Yum! If this doesn’t get you in the Fall mood, then I don’t know what will. :)

Seperate seeds from the pumpkin and wash really well. Place in a strainer; allow to drain for 30 minutes, then spread out on a baking pan and use a hair dryer to dry them quickly (seriously).

Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Toss seed with your choice of seasonings (see suggestions below) and spread seeds evenly over a cookie sheet. Bake for 15-30 minutes or until golden brown, checking every few minutes and stiring about every 5 minutes. Then enjoy your yummy fall treat! Happy carving & eating!

*Seasoning Suggestions: 4 tbsp melted butter, or 1/2 tsp garlic salt, or 2 tsp Worchestershire sauce!

Belles of Southern Proper

October 7th, 2009

soprogalsWe are carrying a new brand called Southern Proper and we couldn’t be happier about it! They are an Atlanta company, started by two young “belles” of the South. Emilie Henderson, of Tennessee, and Reagan Hardy, of North Carolina. They decided to start Southern Proper with a vision of creating a sophisticated and influential attire for the southern gentleman. Their prints and styles compliment the South the way a cold glass of sweet tea compliments our southern food. We are indeed in love and know you will love everything they stand for. You can see their attire and accessories at www.thepinkpelican.com.

And remember, “Look your best, but more importantly, hang your arm on someone who looks his best too”.

How fun is that!?

I found this article from People Magazine from 1982! It totally tells the tale of Lilly! Love it!

No One Needs to Be Shiftless This Summer, Thanks to Lilly Pulitzer of Palm Beach

The pink-and-green tide of preppiness that washed over the country last year may have tickled the fancies of countless Muffys, Buffys and Sissys, but it also raised some healthy profits for a woman who hardly needs them: Lilly Pulitzer of Palm Beach. Daughter of a prominent horse-racing family and former wife of a newspaper heir, the independent Lilly has made her fortune selling blindingly bright floral prints splashed on her sportswear and trademark shifts in 31 Lilly Pulitzer shops nationwide. Her annual gross: approximately $15 million.

Lilly started from the bottom—not financially, but emotionally. Back in 1957 she was 26, filthy rich, married to press lord Joseph Pulitzer’s playboy grandson, Peter, and miserable. “I loved a good time,” she says, “but Palm Beach society wasn’t it.” The situation landed Lilly in a Westchester, N.Y. mental hospital for six months of analysis. “I went crazy,” says Lilly bluntly. “I was a namby-pamby; people always made decisions for me. The doctor said I should find something to do.”

Three years later, she did. The millionaire matron started selling oranges and grapefruits grown in Peter’s Florida groves from the backseat of the family station wagon. The activity prompted admiration from neighbors. A few months later she began selling juice. “Since I spent my days squeezing fruit, I was always covered with juice,” recalls Lilly. “So I designed myself a cotton shift in colors that matched the fruit.”

Her shockingly flamboyant orange-yellow-and-green print shift was slit on both sides for comfort, fully lined (so that there was no need for underwear), topped with a bow and backed with a zipper. It got so many compliments she asked her dressmaker (Lilly can’t sew) to whip up 20 shapeless shifts in green-and-pink florals and red-and-blue prints and stripes to sell along with the fruit. “They took off like zingo,” she reports. “Everybody loved them, and I went into the dress business.”

The Lilly, as Pulitzer’s trademark smock came to be known (syndicated columnist Eugenia Sheppard called it “a cross between a chemise and a muumuu”), has been worn by the moneyed likes of Jackie and Rose Kennedy, Dina Merrill and Happy Rockefeller. While the shift remains Pulitzer’s staple, this summer Lilly is also offering snappy sun dresses, silk sheaths, off-the-shoulder dresses and blouses and short-sleeved sweat shirts for the prep set.

Nor has Lilly neglected the preppy male. George Plimpton, Bob Hope and Joe Namath all sported her wildly flowered pink-and-blue PJs (Pulitzer Jeans) more than a decade before Brooke Shields wiggled into her first pair of Calvins. Lilly named her men’s night—shirt Sneaky Pete after Peter (”It seemed fitting”). They divorced in 1969. “We had nothing in common,” says Lilly. “He was always away hunting, fishing or flying his plane.” That same year she married Enrique Rousseau, now 65, a Cuban lawyer and rancher who recently retired from managing a Howard Johnson’s motel in Miami that Peter owns.

One of three daughters born to Lillian and Robert McKim, Lilly lived a charmed childhood in Roslyn, N.Y. and Palm Beach even before her parents divorced and her mother married Ogden Phipps, a noted Thoroughbred owner. After graduating from Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Conn. (Jackie O was a schoolmate), Lilly worked briefly as a nurse’s aide at New York’s Bellevue Hospital Center before marrying Peter in 1952. “I was a gypsy, living a carefree life of ponies and tennis,” she remembers. “I wore jeans while others dressed up.”

Little has changed. She loves to run in the sand and used to walk barefoot almost everywhere. A night out means “going hog-wild,” singing, dancing and drinking vodka in Palm Beach saloons or at the homes of friends. “Lilly sits on my lap while I play the piano,” says society bandleader Peter Duchin, a pal for 30 years. “She’s an original with a great sense of humor.”

Lilly and Enrique are building a spacious villa in Palm Beach where she will spend as much time as possible with her children, Peter, 28, Minnie, 26, and Liza, 25, her two grandchildren and Enrique’s three grandchildren. She has a maid and a gardener, skips up to New York four times a year, and visits either Europe or South America for a month each fall. “I’m lucky, I guess,” she says. “But I never really enjoy vacations. I need the energy and excitement of my business.”

We are super excited to announce that we will be carrying these adorable and fashionable bags, coming this Spring. This new co-branded collection will include not only bags, but small accessories and tennis sleeves. They will all feature three custom Lilly Pulitzer prints, tailored exclusively to each classic silhouette. Ladies, have you gotten a mammogram yet? Breast cancer is a serious, life-changing, disease. 12.6% of all women will get breast cancer, and every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer. Personally, I was shocked to read some of the facts. One in particular talks about the age you should start a yearly mammogram and it’s not 35 like I’ve always heard. It is 20 years old! I’m already behind. So with reading the facts, I’ve made my mammogram appointment - have you yet? Call the doctor, life can always wait for an important doctor’s appointment. Have I mentioned the first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a mammogram before it can be felt or any other symtoms are present? Get your mammogram today. And yes, it is THAT important.

breast-cancer-ribbonOne of the neat things about breast cancer awareness month is talking about all the amazing campaigns that go on. PRVCY Premium Jeans have rolled at an amazing campaign called the PRVCY Premium Bracelet Contest. They are spreading the word on the awareness of  breast cancer by giving you an awareness bracelet. Go to www.prvcypremium.com/contest/bracelet/ and fill out a form to receive your free bracelet today. The founder of PRVCY Premium, Carolyn Jones, lost her mother to breast cancer, which inspired her to start the jean line. Carolyn Jones named her company PRVCY, pronounced Privacy, after talking with her mother about wanted more privacy with the hospital gowns. To help spread the word and help with the healing of breast cancer, PRVCY donates 10 percent of ALL sales proceeds to breast cancer awareness and free mammograms. Since 2003, they have donated already several hundred thousand dollars and everyday that number is growing.

If you are like me, I’m not a huge haunted house fan…I’ll admit it, they scare the bajeezes out of me. So every October you can find me at every pumpkin patch, orchard festival, and ghost tours (trust me, not the same as Halloween haunted houses). So I thought I would share some places that I will be going to this season. Enjoy!

Pumpkins found at Tate Farm

Pumpkins found at Tate Farm

1. TATE FARMS COTTON PICKIN’ PUMPKINS - By far the cutest farm ever! They have a wonderful pumpkin patch to choose your future jack-o-lantern from or you can actually go to the pumpkin field yourself and choose one right off the vine! It brings back the best childhood memories! They also have hayrides, face painting, a petting zoo and farm animals! And if you are looking for that oh-so-fresh produce, they have that as well including fresh honey from their hives. Some of my favorite buys from Tate Farms, besides the pumpkins, are the beautiful cotton bolls and stalks, wheat straw, chrysanthemums, and corn shocks. My home looks so festive for the fall season!

2. HUNTSVILLE GHOST WALK - I love this! This is a guided tour of some of the historical downtown places that are (possibly) haunted. You may even spot the angry ghost living at the Madison County Courthouse or the restless spirits of boys and girls singing on Walker Street.

3. MADISON SQUARE STROLL - Similar to the Huntsville Ghost Walk, come join this walking tour with guide, and top hat donning, S.A. Hale for a night of tales. Every Saturday night of October you can hear all about weird events of the community with stories of murder, kidnapping, ghosts, train accidents and even a drowning.

I hope this helps to put you in the Halloween spirit, without the ghouls and goblins (ack!). And remember, if you know of other fun (and tame) places, let us know about it! We love to hear from the community!

Stay safe this Halloween!
